800x2400mm Tiles: Complete Porcelain Slab Buying Guide

Here's the thing most people searching this term are picturing a "big tile." What they're actually buying is closer to engineered stone. These slabs are continuously pressed, fired at high temperature, and calibrated to a tolerance that a standard 600x1200mm tile never needs to meet. That distinction matters more than the size number does.

800x2400mm porcelain slab is a continuous-pressed ceramic surface with water absorption of ≤0.5% under the ISO 13006 BIa classification. In real-world application, this means it resists staining and frost far better than natural stone, which is why it's now specified for both premium residential floors and exterior ventilated facades.

You'll find this size marketed under a few names large format porcelain (LFP), gauged porcelain tile panels, or simply "slab tiles." All three point to the same product.

  • About 800x2400 mm

What Are 800x2400mm Tiles?

An 800x2400mm tile is a porcelain slab measuring roughly 2.6 x 7.9 feet (31.5 x 94.5 inches) one of the largest formats currently produced for flooring, wall cladding, and countertops in India. It falls under the large-format porcelain slab category, and it's built to do one job well: cover a lot of surface with as few joints as possible. Manufacturing for this format is concentrated in Morbi, Gujarat, India's largest ceramic tile production hub.

Technical Specifications

Most product pages for this size stop at "porcelain, matt or glossy, low water absorption." That's not enough to actually spec a project. Here's what the number should say, and what standard it's tested against.

Parameter Typical Spec Standard
Water Absorption ≤0.5% (premium slabs ≤0.05%) ISO 13006 (BIa) / IS 15622:2017
Breaking Strength >1300 N (thin) to >2000 N (15mm) EN 14411
Modulus of Rupture (MOR) ≥35 N/mm² ISO 10545
PEI Rating III to V (commercial-grade at 15mm) ISO 10545
Slip Resistance (R-value) R9–R10 for matt/textured DIN 51130
DCOF (wet areas) ≥0.42 ANSI A137.1
Rectified Edge Tolerance ±0.1% IS 15622:2017

Values are representative of premium-grade slabs at this format confirm exact figures against manufacturer test certificates before specifying a project.

A few things worth flagging plainly. Full body vitrified material at this size will typically edge out glazed slabs on breaking strength, simply because the colour runs through the entire body instead of sitting on a surface layer. Water absorption under 0.5% is what gives these slabs frost resistance genuinely relevant if you're exporting to colder markets, less so for most of India except high-altitude project sites.

One number gets asked about constantly and rarely answered honestly: PEI rating. For 15mm slabs used in heavy commercial floors, you want PEI IV or above. For wall cladding at 6–9mm, PEI barely matters since there's no foot traffic.

Sizes, Thickness & Weight

Thickness isn't a style choice here it's a structural one.

  • 6mm–9mm wall cladding, ventilated facades, elevation work. Chosen specifically to reduce dead load on the structure.
  • 12mm heavier wall applications, some flooring in light-traffic zones.
  • 15mm flooring, countertops, high-traffic commercial areas. This is the thickness most Indian buyers actually end up ordering.
  • 20mm outdoor paving, exterior applications needing extra impact resistance.

On weight: a 15mm slab in this size weighs somewhere around 65–68 kg and covers close to 1.92 square metres (about 20.67 sq ft) per piece. That coverage number matters more than buyers realise dealers quote per square foot, but you're buying full slabs. If your room needs 20.9 sq ft, you're still buying two full slabs, not 1.05. Use a tile coverage calculator to convert your room's square footage into exact slab quantities before ordering it removes the guesswork dealers often leave to the buyer.

Rectified edges are standard at this size, with dimensional tolerance around ±0.1%. That's what allows the ultra-thin 2mm grout lines you see in showroom photos without rectification, that kind of joint simply isn't achievable.

Available Finishes

Glossy, matt, carving, and sugar finish all exist at 800x2400mm, though not every factory produces every finish at this size worth confirming before you fall in love with a sample.

Matt and textured finishes have been gaining ground over high-gloss in the mid-to-premium segment, largely because they hide dust and footprints better on a floor this size. Carving finish the reactive-glaze textured look that mimics natural stone grain is seeing real demand in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities right now, though it does add a premium. Nano polish is a related finish-adjacent treatment worth knowing about too: it adds surface shine and stain resistance, but it's a coating effect, not a substitute for the slab's actual glaze durability.

Book-matched slabs, where two adjacent pieces mirror each other's veining to create a continuous pattern, are a genuine differentiator for feature walls. One honest note: because the pattern comes from kiln firing, book-matched pairs are rarely 100% mirror-perfect. Expect close, not identical.

Applications

  • Flooring living rooms, lobbies, commercial floors (15mm+ recommended)
  • Wall cladding & elevation 6–9mm slabs reduce dead load on facades
  • Kitchen countertops full body slabs preferred for exposed edges
  • Bathroom walls and shower enclosures fewer grout lines, easier to keep clean
  • TV walls and reception features book-matched slabs for a seamless design statement
  • Ventilated facades increasingly specified for commercial and high-rise elevation

Surprisingly, one of the fastest-growing use cases isn't flooring at all it's kitchen countertops, where 15mm full body slabs are now being positioned as a direct alternative to granite and engineered quartz. Porcelain doesn't etch under acidic liquids the way natural stone can, and it won't yellow under UV exposure the way some quartz resins do outdoors.

Advantages Over Smaller Tiles

Fewer grout lines is the obvious one, but it's not the only reason architects are specifying this size over 600x1200mm or 1200x2400mm.

800x2400mm porcelain slabs compared with natural stone showing durability, seamless design, kitchen countertop applications, and performance benefits

  • Near-seamless, monolithic visual continuity across large floors and walls.
  • Easier long-term cleaning fewer joints means less grout to maintain.
  • Genuine design flexibility for waterfall-edge islands and mitered countertop corners.
  • Strong dimensional stability from rectified calibration.

What most buyers overlook is that this advantage comes with a labour trade-off, which we'll get to shortly. Bigger isn't automatically better for every project it's better for projects that can absorb the installation complexity. For even larger runs, some buyers step up to 800x3200mm worth comparing before committing to either format.

Where NOT to Use 800x2400mm Slabs

This is the section most sellers skip, and it's the one that saves buyers the most money.

  • Don't use it on a tight budget where installation cost wasn't factored in labour for large-format slabs runs meaningfully higher than standard tile due to the crew size and tools required.
  • Avoid it on wood subfloors with any deflection or bounce that hasn't been structurally corrected. Porcelain has zero flex; a bouncy subfloor will crack it.
  • Skip it if the space will need frequent future drilling or alterations patching into a slab this size later is a visible, difficult repair.
  • Think twice in cramped stairwells, narrow corridors, or tight lift access physically manoeuvring an 800x2400mm slab into a small space is its own project.
  • Not ideal if you can't source enough slabs from a single production batch colour matching across batches on a large wall is genuinely hard to fix after installation.

What Most Installers Will Tell You

Ask any installer who's actually handled this size, and you'll get some version of the same warning: the tile is the easy part. The labour is where projects go over budget.

Large slabs need a minimum two-person crew using vacuum suction lifters not because it looks professional, but because manual handling without full-surface support causes the slab to flex and develop internal stress fractures you won't see until it's cut or laid. Storage matters too. Slabs should sit vertically on A-frame carts; stack them flat and you risk the same invisible bending stress.

Cutting needs a continuous-rim diamond blade, and the disc should run at least 1.5mm larger than the slab thickness for a clean pass. On long cuts, most experienced installers prefer pull-action cutters over push-action less shoulder fatigue over a full working day. After cutting, the edge gets dressed with progressively finer diamond pads to remove burrs and open the pores for better grout bonding.

Honestly, this is the most overlooked detail in any large-format tile project: substrate prep isn't optional here. It's the difference between a floor that lasts and one that hollow-sounds within a year.

Installation Requirements

Substrate flatness is non-negotiable at this size. Maximum variance should stay within roughly 3mm over 3 metres anything more, and you're setting up lippage before the first slab even goes down.

Mortar coverage is the other detail that determines whether this floor lasts. Interior floors need 85%+ mortar contact; wet areas and outdoor applications need closer to 95%. Anything less, and you're leaving voids under the slab hollow spots that turn into cracks the first time something heavy sits on them. Double-buttering (applying adhesive to both the substrate and the back of the slab) is how installers hit that coverage target consistently.

Adhesive should be spread with a large-format trowel a ½" square notch or ¾" round notch with ridges run perpendicular to the slab's long edge so trapped air has somewhere to escape. On vertical wall installations, mechanical compaction with an orbital sander is sometimes used to eliminate air pockets that hand-pressure alone won't clear.

Avoid running bond (brick) pattern layouts. Large slabs carry a small amount of natural micro-warping from the kiln, and a 50/50 brick offset puts that warp right where it's most visible. Keep the offset to a maximum of 1/3, and lippage stays controlled.

Professional installation of 800x2400mm porcelain slab using suction lifters and double buttering adhesive method.

Adhesive & Grouting Recommendations

Use a polymer-modified thin-set adhesive, C2TE S1/S2 grade standard tile adhesive doesn't have the flexibility or bond strength this format needs. This corresponds to India's IS 15477 standard for polymer-modified tile adhesives always confirm the bag references this, not a standard sand-cement mix. Sand-cement mortar alone does not bond reliably to vitrified porcelain and is a common cause of hollow spots and later cracking at this format.

Grout joints should be a minimum of 2mm for rectified slabs (some installers prefer closer to 3mm for added movement tolerance). Continuous perimeter and field expansion joints, filled with 100% silicone, are required roughly every 25 square metres indoors to absorb thermal movement skip this, and you risk tenting or buckling down the line. For high-traffic or commercial floors, epoxy grout is worth considering over standard cement grout, since it holds up better against staining over time.

One detail buyers rarely hear until it's too late: immediately after installation, cement and adhesive residue needs an acid-based initial clean, not the pH-neutral cleaner used for daily maintenance. Skip that first acid wash, and the residue can bond into a permanent haze that regular cleaning never fully removes. Day-to-day after that, a pH-neutral cleaner is what protects the finish long-term.

Price Guide in India

Price varies by brand and location. Verify with your local tile dealer.

That said, a few things you can count on regardless of brand: 18% GST applies on all tile purchases, and Morbi factory lead time typically runs 3–10 days for domestic dispatch. Export container orders take considerably longer production and shipping for large-slab container loads to major ports usually falls in the 20–40 day range, so factor that into project timelines if you're sourcing for a build outside India.

Metro pricing tends to run noticeably higher than Tier-2 city rates for the same slab, largely due to transport and dealer margin stacking. If you're near Morbi or working with a factory-direct supplier, that gap works in your favour always worth asking whether ex-factory or ex-godown pricing is available before accepting a metro dealer quote.

One budgeting mistake shows up constantly: buyers price the tile carefully and then get blindsided by the labour quote. For large-format slabs, installation cost is a genuinely significant line item often comparable to or exceeding the tile cost itself once you account for the crew size, specialised tools, and substrate correction most rooms need. Ask for an installation quote before you finalise the tile order, not after.

Myth vs Reality

Myth Reality
"15mm thickness makes it unbreakable" No tile is unbreakable. 15mm gives high impact resistance, but it still needs a perfectly flat substrate and full mortar coverage to perform.
"Can be installed over any existing floor" These slabs demand near-perfect substrate flatness. Installing over an uneven existing floor is close to guaranteed failure.
"100% stain-proof" Polished porcelain is highly stain-resistant, not stain-proof. Prolonged exposure to harsh acids without cleanup can still dull the finish.
"Seamless means zero joints" Large-format doesn't mean joint-free. A minimum 2–3mm grout joint is still required to absorb movement and prevent cracking.

Common Buyer Mistakes

  • Ordering the exact quantity needed. Always add 5–10% extra for standard cuts, and closer to 15–20% for a format this large, where wastage and future repair matching both eat into the margin.
  • Ignoring batch (lot) numbers. Colour and shade can shift subtly between production batches. On a large wall, mixed batches show up as visible banding.
  • Choosing glazed tiles for exposed edges. If the edge will be visible a countertop, a window sill specify full body or colour body slabs so the core matches the surface. A glazed edge looks unfinished.
  • Skipping the flatness check. Buyers assume the installer will "figure it out." A substrate that's out of tolerance needs correction before the slab goes down, not after.
  • Not asking about book-match tolerance. If you're ordering book-matched pairs for a feature wall, understand upfront that natural firing variation means they won't be a perfect mirror.

Split comparison of incorrect versus correct installation practices for 800x2400mm porcelain slab tiles in India.

Expert Opinion

Ask two experienced installers about cutting technique on long runs, and you'll get a genuine disagreement some swear by pull-action manual cutters for reduced fatigue, others prefer push-action for control on shorter cuts. Neither is wrong; it comes down to the individual job and the installer's own preference.

Where there's less debate: batch consistency is the single biggest factory-side risk on a project this size. A slight shade or calibre variation that's barely noticeable on a 600x600mm tile becomes obvious across a continuous 800x2400mm wall. That's exactly why checking Lot, Caliber, and Shade code together all three, not just one before delivery isn't optional at this format; it's the difference between a wall that reads as one surface and one that visibly doesn't. Mixing caliber codes causes size micro-variation between slabs, which shows up as uneven grout lines and lippage a separate risk from shade banding.

There's also a fair contrarian point worth making plainly: this size is not always the better choice. For a small apartment bathroom, a rental property, or a tight-budget renovation, 800x2400mm is often more slab than the space or the budget needs. A 600x1200mm format gets you most of the seamless look at a fraction of the handling cost and complexity.

Buyer inspecting 800x2400mm porcelain slabs in a Morbi tile warehouse before placing a factory-direct order.

Buyer scenarios, briefly:

  • Premium villa or commercial lobby 800x2400mm is genuinely worth it for the visual impact and reduced grout maintenance.
  • Small apartment consider 600x1200mm or 800x1600mm; easier handling, lower installation cost, similar aesthetic.
  • Rental property skip large-format slabs; repair and replacement complexity isn't worth it on a property you don't own long-term.
  • Export/wholesale buyer 800x2400mm from Morbi, using the same Italian press technology as European suppliers, typically comes in meaningfully cheaper landed worth comparing FOB quotes directly.

Yes, in 15mm full body slab form. Full body material is preferred over glazed for countertops because exposed and mitred edges need the core colour to match the surface finish.

What is the difference between full body and glazed 800x2400mm tiles?

Full body vitrified material carries colour through the entire slab thickness, so cut or exposed edges match the surface. Glazed tiles have a coloured layer only on top fine for floors, but the wrong choice for visible edges. For India-specific specification, this is referred to as full-body vitrified material rather than "through-body porcelain."

How much does an 800x2400mm slab weigh, and what's the MOQ for export orders?

A 15mm slab weighs approximately 65–68 kg and covers about 20.67 sq ft per piece (full sizing details above). Export MOQ varies by manufacturer and typically follows full container load (FCL) planning confirm current figures with your Morbi supplier.

Is 800x2400mm tile suitable for outdoor or high-traffic commercial use?

Yes, provided you specify the right thickness (15–20mm) and confirm PEI IV–V rating along with an R9–R10 slip rating for wet or outdoor zones. Ask your dealer for the specific ISO 10545 test data before confirming for a commercial project.
